The Federal Government has unveiled plans to construct bamboo houses across the country to meet the housing needs of low and middle-income earners.
Esuabana Asanye, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, announced the initiative on Wednesday in Abuja at a capacity-building workshop on the relevance of bamboo for climate-smart housing construction. Represented by the Director of Environmental Science and Technology, Bernadette Oguche, Asanye said the project aims to promote environmental sustainability while ensuring affordability, comfort, and adaptability.
He described bamboo as a versatile and sustainable material used globally in construction, traditional medicine, and paper production. According to him, adopting bamboo for housing will contribute to the country’s climate change mitigation efforts.
Asanye also commended the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) for its research and innovations in providing climate-resilient building solutions.
