The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has directed the immediate suspension of all enforcement actions related to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol products nationwide.
The directive followed an official communication from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control regarding plans by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to enforce the ban.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Terrence Kuanum, the OSGF said the correspondence from the House committee, dated November 13, 2025, is currently under review. The letter was signed by the committee’s Deputy Chairman, Uchenna Okonkwo.
According to the statement, the OSGF is examining the matter in line with its statutory role as Chairman of the Cabinet Secretariat and coordinating authority of government policies.
“Accordingly, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation directs that all actions, decisions, or enforcement measures relating to the proposed sachet alcohol ban be suspended pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive,” the statement said.
The OSGF further clarified that any enforcement action carried out by NAFDAC or any other agency without clearance from the office is invalid and should be disregarded by the public until a final decision is formally communicated.
It assured Nigerians that relevant legislative resolutions, economic implications, public health concerns, and broader national interest considerations are being carefully reviewed to ensure a lawful, balanced, and well-coordinated outcome.
