The Federal Government has announced the closure of over 13.5 million social media accounts across major platforms for violating Nigeria’s code of practice on online content.
According to the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by operators of interactive computer service platforms, including Google, Microsoft, TikTok and others, a total of 13,597,057 accounts were shut down for offensive content and related violations.
The report, jointly issued under the supervision of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), also revealed that 58,909,112 harmful posts were removed from various platforms.
In a statement on Wednesday, NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar disclosed that the government agencies received 754,629 registered complaints during the period under review. She commended major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and TikTok for adhering to Nigeria’s regulations on harmful online content.
The 2024 report is titled “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report Highlights Social Media Platforms’ Efforts on Online Harm Protection.”
