The Federal Government has officially inaugurated the Governing Council and Principal Officers of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.
At the inauguration ceremony held on Monday in Abuja, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa emphasized that FUET was founded to expand access to quality higher education in strategic areas, including environmental sciences and technology. He urged the new council members and officers to perform their duties with integrity and in accordance with existing laws, highlighting that they were selected based on merit.
Dr. Alausa called on the council to work collaboratively to foster the development of the institution and maintain harmonious relations among stakeholders. He disclosed that although FUET was not included in the 2025 federal budget, President Bola Tinubu directed the sourcing of funds to support its launch, with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) already approving the takeoff grant.
“The responsibilities you are assuming require visionary leadership, strategic oversight, accountability, and unwavering integrity,” Dr. Alausa stated. He added that the council must protect the university’s autonomy, ensure merit-based decisions, and uphold its core values.
Highlighting the university’s location, the minister described Koroma/Saakpenwa as an ideal setting for academic and research activities. He outlined FUET’s vision to become a centre of excellence focused on environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technology research. “The university will develop homegrown, research-driven solutions tailored to local and global challenges,” he said.
In a goodwill message, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, praised the selection of Ogoniland for the university, noting its relevance for research and learning. She said FUET would serve as a hub of innovation and a catalyst for socio-economic growth in the Niger Delta region.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, pledged full support to ensure the university meets its mandate.
Speaking on behalf of the Governing Council, Pro-Chancellor Professor Don Baridam described the appointment as a national duty, especially at a time when environmental sustainability and technological innovation are crucial to Nigeria’s development. He assured that the council would execute its responsibilities with humility and dedication.
FUET is set to admit its first cohort of students in September 2025. The university’s establishment aligns with the Tinubu administration’s commitment to expanding specialized and transformative tertiary education in fields vital to sustainable development.
