The Federal Government has inaugurated a ₦40 billion closed-circuit television (CCTV) control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, as part of efforts to strengthen safety and surveillance on the vital transport link.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, had in 2025 announced the installation of surveillance cameras on the bridge, noting that the initiative was designed to prevent suicide attempts and improve security. He also stated at the time that security operatives would monitor the CCTV footage and enforce speed regulations.
Speaking on Sunday at the inauguration of the control centre, Umahi said the current administration inherited severe infrastructural challenges on key bridges in Lagos.
“When we came on board in 2023, we met a very terrible Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge, both on the pavement, surface, infrastructure above the water and even infrastructure below the water,” he said.
“The president, therefore, directed total re-evaluation and rehabilitation of the surfaces of the Third Mainland Bridge and changing the expansion joints.
“Lagosians were very happy with the president for that beautiful work, and that work completed and commissioned is still succeeding because of the quality.”
Umahi commended China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which executed the project, for delivering what he described as quality work.
He added that the Ministry of Works would hand over a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans provided under the contract to the Nigeria Police Force to enhance monitoring and security on the bridge.
