The Federal Government has debunked rumours of an attempted coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming its confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
This follows a statement by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) dismissing a report by Sahara Reporters which alleged that 16 military officers had been detained in connection with a plot supposedly linked to the cancellation of Nigeria’s Independence Day parade.
Defence spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, described the publication as “fake and mischievous,” aimed at creating unnecessary tension in the country. He clarified that the cancellation of the Independence Day parade was purely for administrative reasons, adding that the ongoing investigation involving the officers in question was routine and unrelated to any coup plot.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a chat with The Punch, reaffirmed the government’s trust in the military, assuring that it would continue to support the armed forces in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
