Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has described as illegal the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw state funds on behalf of state judiciaries.

Wike disclosed this during a special court session organised to mark the opening of 2020/2021 legal year of the Rivers state judiciary in Port Harcourt on Friday, Nov.13 2020.

Wike noted that if the decision is implemented more problems will be created and this will hamper the independence of the judiciary, as it is a clear breach of the constitutional powers of Governors to manage State resources in a federal system.

He also said despite the issue of inadequate funding plaguing the judiciary and preventing their autonomy and efficiency, the situation in Rivers State has been different.
