The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming urban transportation, easing traffic congestion and stimulating economic growth across the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the approval on Thursday while addressing members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.
The announcement came less than 24 hours after the governor formally aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Yusuf said the decision of his administration to realign with the Federal Government under the APC was strategic, noting that it was driven by the need to attract critical development projects capable of accelerating Kano’s socio-economic progress.
According to him, the proposed metropolitan rail service will deliver a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system linking key districts within the Kano metropolis. He explained that the project is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents, boost trade, attract investment and enhance the overall quality of life in the state.
Describing the rail project as a landmark intervention, the governor said it would reposition Kano as a leading transportation and commercial hub in Northern Nigeria.
He assured residents that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparency in implementation and to guarantee that the project delivers maximum benefits to the people.
