The Recording Academy has posthumously inducted Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame, honoring his groundbreaking 1976 album Zombie. The announcement places Kuti among the world’s most influential musical figures, recognizing his enduring impact on global music and activism.

Fela’s eldest son, Femi Kuti, issued a statement on behalf of the Kuti family, expressing pride in the recognition. “We are honoured to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. His music continues to inspire and unite people across the world,” the statement read.

Regarded as a revolutionary body of work, Zombie sharply criticized military rule in Nigeria and became a rallying cry for resistance. Kuti’s fusion of jazz, funk, highlife, and politically charged lyrics helped define the Afrobeat genre and positioned music as a powerful tool for social change.

Decades after his death in 1997, Fela Kuti’s influence remains strong. His music is sampled by international artists, played at protests, and celebrated at festivals around the globe. As Nigerian music continues to shape global pop culture, Kuti’s legacy stands as a symbol of artistic courage and cultural pride.
