The Federal Government has unveiled plans to deploy seven million smart electricity meters nationwide under the Presidential Metering Initiative, in a bid to eliminate estimated billing and reduce revenue leakages in the power sector.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Mrs. Olu Verheijen, disclosed this on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, marking the second anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
Verheijen said the large-scale meter rollout is targeted at ending collection losses for millions of unmetered on-grid customers. She emphasized that the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the commercial viability of Nigeria’s gas-to-power value chain.
“We are implementing several measures to enhance the commercial viability of the gas-to-power sector,” she said. “This includes developing policies and frameworks that support cost-reflective electricity pricing and drive efficiency in cost determination.”
The government says the initiative is a step towards improving transparency and sustainability in the country’s power supply system.
