PORT HARCOURT – A fatal accident on Aker Road, Iwofe, in Port Harcourt has claimed the life of one person, following reports that indiscriminately parked tankers in the area contributed to the incident.
The accident occurred on Monday morning, according to eyewitness accounts. Popular Port Harcourt singer Gthree Mayami, who confirmed the incident in a public statement, identified the deceased as his friend and called on authorities to urgently address the persistent problem of tanker congestion in the area.
He said, “This morning, I lost a dear friend in a tragic car accident around Aker Road. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that yesterday was his birthday. I had planned to be there to celebrate with him—but I couldn’t make it. Now, he’s gone. Just like that.
“It hurts deeply. And what hurts even more is knowing this could have been prevented.
To the government and those in authority: how many more lives must we lose before something is done about the tanker trucks parked carelessly along Iwofe Road, stretching all the way to Aker? These trucks have become silent killers—death traps waiting in the dark. There are no streetlights, the roads are broken and filled with potholes, and visibility at night is almost nonexistent. It’s a recipe for disaster, and it’s already claiming lives—precious lives, like my friend’s.
If those in charge won’t act, maybe it’s time we, the youth, raise our voices. Maybe it’s time we protest—not out of anger, but out of pain and love for the lives we keep losing to neglect.
“We need change. We deserve safer roads. And we need it now—before another light is taken from us too soon.
Rest easy, my friend. You should still be here.“
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety risks posed by tankers parked along the road, urging government intervention to prevent further tragedies
