Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has cautioned state governments against actions that could jeopardize national security and stability.
Speaking on Wednesday, Fagbemi accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of allegedly influencing militants to sabotage oil pipelines in the state. His comments came in defense of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers due to ongoing political unrest.
Fagbemi argued that while Fubara may not have directly ordered the attacks, his failure to condemn the militants’ threats made him complicit.
The AGF underscored the importance of Nigeria’s oil sector, warning that any attack on critical infrastructure poses a threat to the entire nation. He also cited a Supreme Court ruling as the legal basis for Tinubu’s emergency declaration, emphasizing that the move was necessary to safeguard key assets and restore order in Rivers State.
