The Rivers State Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development, has warned against exposure of water to sunlight, as it could cause cancer.
Commissioner for water resources in the state, Hon. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja disclosed this during a meeting with stakeholders of the water sector in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
According to him, it is the duty of government to protect her citizens, as he directed the state Water Regulatory Commission to strictly enforce section 140 of the water sector development law of 2012.
The law simply states that no person shall operate as a service provider unless he/she holds a license by the commission.
Dr. Tamunosisi, stated that failure to enforce the law is simply exposing residents of the state to poor drinking water which is detrimental to health.
He warned illegal service providers to desist from the act or face the full weight of the law when caught.
