ESOCS Devotional 9 September 2023 – Your Sin Atoned For
MEMORY VERSE: “With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for”. Isaiah 6:7 NIV
TEXT: ISAIAH 6:1-7 (KJV)
In the year that King Uzziah died, [in a vision] I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the skirts of His train filled the [most holy part of the] temple.
2 Above Him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two [each] covered his [own] face, and with two [each] covered his feet, and with two [each] flew.
3 And one cried to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!
6 Then flew one of the seraphim [heavenly beings] to me, having a live coal in his hand which he had taken with tongs from off the altar;
7 And with it he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity and guilt are taken away, and your sin is completely atoned for and forgiven.

The word Atonement can be said to be reparation made by giving an equivalent for an injury; or by suffering that which will be received in satisfaction for an offense or injury.
In our text today, we saw how prophet Isaiah upon seeing the Lord in a vision seated on his throne in the beauty of His holiness realized that he has been a man of unclean lips and also living in the midst of men of unclean lips. At this point, he began to cry because he understood perfectly that by the virtue of his unclean nature as at that time, he wasn’t qualified to stand before Elohim, hence he was filled with guilt.
But then the Bible says, “Then one of the Seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.” (Isaiah 6:6).
The live coal in the hand of the Seraphim in this scripture represents a tool for atonement; he touched the lips of the man of God with it and declared unto him that “His guilt has been taken away and his sins atoned for.”
Every man born of a woman is a carrier of the Adamic nature by default; this nature is characterized with sin and shortcomings. Just like the Prophet Isaiah, with this nature no one is qualified to stand before Elohim. But then there is a system that has been created and a provision made for the atonement of our sins, declaring us guiltless and restoring us back to the nature of God. This atonement offering is the blood of Jesus Christ who died for the sake of us and the entire humanity. “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins; and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2).
Beloved in Christ, just like Apostle John asserted in this portion; the essence of this information is not to advocate licentious living amongst believers but it is to help us understand our position in God and also appreciate the sacrifices of our Lord Jesus Christ, whose blood was used to atone for our sins. The best thing we would do to express our appreciation is to ensure that we live a life that glorifies his name and also help in the growth and advancement of the kingdom of God.
- Appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for your life, and be challenged to live a life of righteousness.
- Lord Jesus, thank you for the sacrifices you paid for me and the entire humanity. Give me grace to live a life that will forever glorify your name.
