MEMORY VERSE: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8
TEXT: REVELATION 1:8-20
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
9 I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. 19 Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. 20 The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

John the Apostle of Lord Jesus Christ was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day on the isle of Patmos owing to the persecution of the believers in Christ Jesus by the authorities of the day. The story had it that he was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil but he did not die but escaped miraculously. Having escaped, the authorities understood that he could not be easily killed. They had to banish him to die on the isle of Patmos. It appears, according to the unfolding events that followed after his banishment to the isle, that it was the Lord that wanted Apostle John to take that forced retreat on that isle of Patmos because of what He wanted to do with him, as regards His revelations to the Church.
It was on that isle of Patmos that he was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day and encountered the Lord in a revelation. There, he saw the glorious Lord in His splendid majesty. He was totally different from what He used to look like when He was here on the earth. The vision had effect on John so much so that he fell down as dead. The Lord in that vision introduced Himself again to John and asked him to write down in a book what he had seen and send to the churches in Asia.
In that vision, the Lord made John to know that He is the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last. Nothing begins or ends outside of Him. He holds the powers and keys of hell and of death. He described Himself as He that lives. This means death does not survive in nor around Him. He was temporarily dead because of your sin in order to take care of it by satisfying divine justice, so that you can be forever free if you believe, accept and walk with Him on the eternal path of righteousness. Satisfying all demands, He rose from the dead and loudly declared ‘I am alive for evermore’. AMEN! He is alive for you and me; He is our Living Lord, the living LORD of God’s Family. Hallelujah! Acts 2:24 says, “Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.” It is very impossible that death can hold His life down in its custody. Never! The living LORD of God’s family in verse 8 said, He is the Almighty, meaning the All Ruling One and also the Omnipotent. The Church better note this and submit all leadership to Him who is the Alpha and Omega of the family of God. He is the Head!
