ESOCS Devotional 9 June 2024 – God is Good and Does Good
MEMORY VERSE: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Genesis 1:31
TEXT: GENESIS 1:26-31
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

There is no argument as to the goodness of God. His handiwork in their pure state are very good and they show forth His goodness. This was what God saw when He looked at His work. The scripture is replete with this conclusion or assertion. Even our hearts in all sincerity without the corruptions of man’s logic and hypothesis cannot deny the beauty of nature and fellow men. Again, even with the knowledge of science, we cannot but acknowledge that the universe is good and can only be made by a good and intelligent Creator or Maker.
Goodness can only flow from a good being with a good heart. Elder James has this to say in James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” So, God is good, perfect, faithful and has no evil in Him. He is good and does good.
This goodness was also the state of the man God made, for he was made in His image. The Pastor’s Study Bible commentary says this – ” Everything God made, including man, was very good. Man was sinless and able to have fellowship with God, and love Him and worship Him in spirit and in truth.” However, sin came and man lost that goodness and became corrupt.
The good God still wants to restore man to that state of goodness. That was why He went all out in His goodness, mercy and love to seek man by giving His only begotten Son to die for man on the Cross. This is to restore him back to the image of God and His likeness (Gen. 1:26). Man, by this will, comes into the glory of God to enjoy God’s goodness and to express same goodness.
- Beloved, have you received this wonderful gift from the good God? If not, do not miss this golden opportunity God is bringing your way this moment. Receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour now and you shall be stirred to express the same goodness of God.
- Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I open my heart to you and I ask that Jesus Christ become my Saviour and Lord, so that I may enter into your goodness and also express it to others, in Jesus name. Amen.
