ESOCS Devotional 9 December 2025 – God’s Wisdom is Priceless
MEMORY VERSE: “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Proverbs 8:11 KJV
TEXT: PROVERBS 8:1-17
Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?
2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill,
Beside the way, where the paths meet.
3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:
4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.
5 O you simple ones, understand prudence,
And you fools, be of an understanding heart.
6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things,
And from the opening of my lips will come right things;
7 For my mouth will speak truth;
Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.
9 They are all plain to him who understands,
And right to those who find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold;
11 For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And find out knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.
14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, I have strength.
15 By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
16 By me princes rule, and nobles,
All the judges of [c]the earth.
17 I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.

According to the Miriam-Webster dictionary, “wisdom is the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships, have good judgment, and a wise attitude, belief, or course of action.”
All wisdom come from God. In 1 Corinthians 1:24, we understand that Jesus is the wisdom of God.
It is so important for us to be wise. We need wisdom in making all our decisions throughout the day, every day of our lives. We aren’t perfect and we make mistakes but when we diligently seek God’s wisdom, we will make better judgment that will lead to a better quality of life for ourselves and all the people in our sphere of influence.
When we ask God for wisdom and diligently seek Him, we will be walking in His plan for our lives. That is a safe place to be in! That doesn’t necessarily mean that God’s way is easy but God sees the bigger picture. His ways are not our ways but God has a better plan for your life and it is good. Solomon chose wisely in his request in 1 Kings 3:9. The wisdom that Solomon had was not gained from learning knowledge from books and scholars. It was wisdom that comes only from God. We need this divine wisdom to make good choices in our everyday lives. .
God’s wisdom is more valuable than riches, more important than anything else you can desire. To receive this wisdom, we should learn to ask God for it (James 1:5) and also, study the word of God regularly, memorizing and meditating on it often (Psalm 119:97-100). God’s Word teaches us God’s Wisdom and leads us to live out God’s Ways. The spiritual discipline of personal Bible study is vital, and it is also a joy. Ethics, virtues, and values are formed as we devote ourselves to God’s Word and His ways, but it is our choice. Choose to be wise by choosing to immerse your life in studying and applying God’s teachings. You will be blessed as you do.
“Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Prov. 8:10-11).
