TEXT: PROVERBS 8:1-21 KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7 KJV
In our text today, the picture of wisdom is figuratively painted as a person to be greatly desired – even above rubies and/or riches. In this personified narrative, wisdom herself speaks to all and sundry – the high and the lowly, the rich and the poor, etc. Wisdom cries in public and all open places, to be heard by those who care to listen – at the gates, paths, and all high places. This contrasts with the approach employed by folly (represented by the adulterous woman of Proverbs Chapter 7:8-9), whose position was at the street corner, twilight, and in the black and dark places of the night, where she lurked to lure the foolish young man into her illicit game of extramarital love.
In verses 4-11, we see that the call of wisdom is not to any particular social class of the society. From the ghetto of the countryside to the palaces and GRAs of city dwelling, wisdom is available for acquisition. She is available to all who willingly seek her.
Wisdom is founded on truth and righteousness; therefore, neither perverse principles nor twisted messages come forth from those who speak with wisdom. Genuine wisdom springs forth from the fear of the Lord, and all those who willingly do the will of God are assured of good understanding and good success (Ps. 111:10; Jos. 1:8).
