TEXT: PROVERB 7:4-23
MEMORY VERSE: “Say unto wisdom, thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman.” Proverbs 7:4KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The book of Proverbs gives us advice for developing high moral standards, so that we can live a life devoid of immorality, amongst other things. One of the ingredients for developing a high moral standard is wisdom. This is the practical application of knowledge. God wants us to be wise. Being wise helps us live a godly life. The book of Proverbs started with a clear declaration of its purpose – to impart wisdom for godly living (Proverbs 7:20). This is followed by a fatherly advice by Solomon to young men in the first few chapters. From our text, we see such advice – wisdom to guard against the sin of immorality. Although the advice is for young men, young women should heed it too. The word of God is for all to learn and become wise.
The lessons from our text are many. A person who has no purpose in life is simple-minded. Without aim or direction, an empty life is unstable, vulnerable to many temptations. Even the young man in our text did not know where he was going, the seductress knows where she wanted him. What were her strategies? She dressed to allure men (7:10); she had bold approach (7:13); she invites him over to her place (7:16-18); she cunningly gives an answer to every of his objections (7:19, 20); she flatters him (7:21); and she traps him (7:23).
The situation is the same today, even more glamorous and amorous. Today, we see ladies expose their bodies, all sorts of face ‘paintings’, attachments to finger nails, eye lashes, etc.
To combat this, one’s life must be full of God’s word and wisdom (Colossian 3:16). Again, recognize their strategies (as they invent new ones daily), and run away from them.
- Are you weak resisting the opposite sex amorous overtures?
- Ask God for spiritual strength and ability to resist such amorous overtures.
