ESOCS Devotional 8 April 2025 – The Incomprehensible Wisdom of God
MEMORY VERSE: “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” 1 Corinthians 1:27
TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:20-31
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”.

Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthian Church near the end of his three-year ministry in Ephesus. He clearly declares the Christian mystery (gospel) of salvation, first revealed to the apostles as the source of true wisdom and by this many claim the knowledge of the supernatural. He best describes this kind of wisdom as heavenly, deeply rooted, extraordinary, and full of life.
Humanity at large has failed to come to know God through human wisdom. The language Paul uses suggests that God in His wisdom did not allow human wisdom to bring them to Him; instead, He has continued in saving those who believe through the folly of what Paul and other apostles preached of the power and the wisdom of God, for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are saved, is the wisdom of God.
God’s wisdom is so deep that His ways are untraceable. You can’t follow God’s wisdom accurately without being hopeless. In fact, the power in His wisdom is so expensive that He does not, and cannot increase in wisdom. His wisdom defines Himself. The scriptures say He created the world and all therein by His great wisdom. He has an exhaustive and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all that is; not by deduction or calculation but by His Supremacy, and Omniscience – all-knowing personality. Even Christ Himself at some point was referred to as God’s wisdom. You will ask why? This tells of the intimate union that subsists between the risen Lord and all His own because in Him we are accepted and completely blessed. God has made Him to us His wisdom, all that we need to be delivered and saved is tied to the knowledge of Christ, making him unfathomable in His nature, knowledge and works.
At all times, God has proven to be wiser than men. People trusting their wisdom or wisdom of others will miss it. True wisdom of God is not something you can work out by logic or philosophy. Evidence is seen in Christ’s life.
