ESOCS Devotional 7 May 2025 – Sowing to the Spirit
MEMORY VERSE: “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” Galatians 6:8
TEXT: GALATIANS 6:7-1
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
11 See with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand! 12 As many as desire to make a good showing in the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. 13 For not even those who are circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.
16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.
17 From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

One of the indicators of a life that is born again is that it is led by the Spirit of God. A Christian is a child of God who is born of the Spirit of God. In John 3:6 the Bible explains that anyone that is born of the flesh is flesh and anyone that is born of the Spirit is spirit. The flesh that you see and its systems is not the main you. You are a spirit with a soul that dwells in a body.
The Bible explains that the flesh is a system in a human that favours sinful and immoral worldly lifestyle by its lust and affections. If you are not born again, you are in the flesh because your spirit is not alive in God. So, you are ruled by the motions of your flesh, which is very active. However, if you are born again, your spirit is alive in God and to righteousness. In fact, your spirit is a new creature and it’s different from your old sinful self. And your flesh is crucified on the cross of Christ (Galatians 5:24; 6:14); and it’s not expected to be active and directing your actions anymore. Rather, your spirit, well fed with the Word of God and also in lively fellowship with the Holy Spirit, should be active and should be directing your life affairs here on earth.
We can better understand our text, which talks about two sowings. Firstly, this text is not primarily referring to sinners or unbelievers but to believers in Christ Jesus at Galatia at that particular time. Sowing here talks about what we invest our time, attention and resources in, and also allow to influence and control our lifestyle in this world. A believer’s flesh is crucified with Christ. It is not meant to control the life of the believer because it’s a sinful system, and can only engender sin. Sin produces corruption and death. So, if as a believer in Christ Jesus you still engage in activities of the flesh and in things that keep the flesh alive in you, you are sowing to the flesh. You will only reap corruption. You won’t be blessed. However, if you are Spirit led, you will sow to the Spirit and will reap everlasting life.
