TEXT: JEREMIAH 1:4-10
MEMORY VERSE: “But the Lord said unto me, say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak” (Jeremiah 1:7 KJV).
Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet to Judah (Southern kingdom). The call came in his early life; it scared him terribly, he gave excuses. From our Bible passage, there are many lessons we can learn from Jeremiah’s call: God’s call and His empowerment always match; God created Jeremiah for a purpose; Jeremiah felt inadequate; God wanted total control; God gave the promise of a blessing; God gave Jeremiah spiritual anointing; God gave Jeremiah a difficult ministry; and But God was with him.
Each Christian has a purpose in life; but some are appointed or anointed by God for a specific work – (Samson – Judges 13:3-5; David – 1 Samuel 16:12, 13; John the Baptist – Luke 1:13-17; Paul – Galatians 1:15, 16). If God gives you a specific task, accept it cheerfully and do it with excellence. If He has not called you, do not call yourself, else you will not ultimately succeed. Rather, seek to fulfil the mission common to all believers – to love, obey, and serve God.
God’s message to Jeremiah was like His message to Moses. The God who made our mouth can provide the words He wants us to speak (Exodus 3:10; 4:10-17). God promised to see him through trouble (but not to stop trouble from coming). God does not keep us from facing life’s storms; but He sees us through them.
Often, some people struggle with new challenges because they lack self-confidence due to inadequate ability, training, or experience. Jeremiah thought he was too young to be God’s spokesman to the world. But God promised to be with him. We must never allow such feelings to keep us from obeying God’s call or other missions. He will always be with us. What are your earliest memories of God’s call on your life?
- What factors draw you back from heeding God’s call to serve Him.
- Pray fervently to God to help you overcome the factors identified.
