ESOCS Devotional 7 July
TEXT: ACTS 15:30-41
MEMORY VERSE: “After spending some time there, they were sent off by the brothers with the blessing of Peace to return to those who had sent them. But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.” Acts 15:33-35 NIV.
The Apostles chose the seven Deacons to do the work of God. The Deacons were chosen because they showed serious interest in the work of God. In our midst we should look out for members who can volunteer to do the work of God. Just like in the Pareto Principle, it is only about 20% percent of the members who do 80% percent of the work of God. Why do we have fewer members volunteer?

- They have a preoccupation with their personal agenda and business. Most people play defense with their calendar.
- They have a fear of responsibility. Afraid that duties may force them to become over committed, they hesitate to do anything.
- They are intimated by present workers who are unwilling to exchange power for fresh ideas.
- Some don’t get involved because they don’t care for anything but themselves.
- Many don’t emphasis the priesthood of the believer or the truth in Ephesians. 4:11-12.
- Some mistakenly believe that only trained or gifted people can serve and since they have no training or special gifts, they don’t qualify.
- Most leaders wrongly assume that people know the vast opportunities that exist. We can do the following to mobilize volunteers:
- Offer training for every position.
- Match ministry opportunity with spiritual gifts.
- Constantly applaud ordinary servants who make a difference.
- Publicize available ministry options.
CHALLENGES
