ESOCS Devotional 6 September 2025 – Fighting Sin
MEMORY VERSE: “But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter.” ROMANS 7:6 KJV
TEXT: ROMANS 7:13-35
Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

There is a war going on, whether you realize it or not. As a believer, the sin that dwells inside of us has declared war on the Spirit of God that is living in us also. Our only choice is to make war on the sin that so desperately wants to destroy us. John Owen said it well: “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.”
By the Spirit of Jesus, we must begin to put to death the deeds (the sin) of the body, so we might live. There are weapons that God has given us to win this war, namely God’s Word, continual prayer, and the body of Christ (each other). Meeting with your group and confessing sin to those around you is also a huge part of being able to fight sin! It is impossible to do life alone.
James 5:16 says confessing sin and praying with one another brings healing! Don’t fight alone. Is there anything you need to share with your group?
Fighting is always easier in numbers. You’ve never seen an “army” of one person. So, by reading God’s Word, listening to His voice, and practising confession and repentance, we fight back against the sin that aims to kill us.
CHALLENGES
- Are you living as though a war is going on? Are you putting up a fight?
- Where are some “battlefronts” in your life that sin is dominating right now?
- What are some that you are winning?
- Has there been a time when you were fighting well against sin? What was effective?
PRAYER POINT
Father, help me to fight the good fight with the believers around me in Jesus name Amen.
