ESOCS Devotional 6 February 2026 – Absolute Obedience
MEMORY VERSE: “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” John 2:5 KJV
TEXT: JOHN 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

The biblical account of Jesus’ early ministry, where he performed his first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana, Galilee, revealing his divine nature. This verse highlights the importance of obedience to Christ and trust in his authority. Mary the mother of Jesus, therefore orders the servants to be absolutely obedient to Him, doing, without disputing, whatsoever he bid them; and indeed, such is the obedience, which we all owe to God and Jesus Christ, if we must obtain anything from God
Mary’s unwavering faith in her Son’s wisdom and goodness inspires us to do the same, trusting that His guidance is always for our best. This applies not only to big life decisions but also to smaller, everyday promptings of the Spirit, reminding us to act simply on what we feel Jesus is leading us to do – abandoning our own desires, no matter how unfamiliar it seems. The command is to do actively what Jesus says. It requires courage and a willingness to step out in faith, even when it feels challenging or strange.
Jesus is the source of wisdom, and His commands are always in harmony with divine truth. We are to look to Him for guidance, rather than following our own whims or fancy. When we commit to doing whatever Jesus tells us, we demonstrate faith, and through this obedience, He continues to lead and guide us into greater things. Jesus doesn’t always give grand pronouncements. He might be leading you to make a difficult phone call, help a neighbor, or simply be patient in a frustrating situation – all you need is absolute obedience to His word.
Don’t overcomplicate His instructions with doubt or fear. Take the step He is prompting you to take, and trust that it is the right one.
Mary’s instructions to the servants embody a spirit of submission and service. By adopting this posture, we open ourselves to the transformative power of Jesus in our lives. By obeying Jesus, a believer demonstrates faith in His ability to work miracles and transform our lives.
Reflections
