TEXT: NUMBERS 27:12–23
MEMORY VERSE: “And the Lord said unto Moses, take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him charge in their sight” (Numbers 27:18-20 KJV).
In any organization, group, team, community, church, and even family, leadership gap is a very serious issue that can threaten the progress of such entity. Moses knew this, and that was why of all the wonderful ways he expressed his leadership, the most strategic was his training of Joshua, who was destined to become the key element of Moses’ legacy. Moses asked God to help him find a replacement who would be a capable leader, and Joshua was chosen. Moses handed over to him seamlessly in the following ways:
- He empowered Joshua and gave him authority – Num. 27:15-23
- He gave Joshua experience and opportunities for application -Num. 27:21-22
- He gave him encouragement and affirmation- Numb. 27:23
Some leaders are task oriented only, while others are both task and people oriented. A leader must one day vacate the position. To minimize leadership gaps, anyone in leadership position should train others to carry on the duties should he or she suddenly or eventually leaves. This is the best legacy. A sit tight leader who has no management succession plan is a failure.
Leaders in our churches and countries should follow Moses’ pattern: pray, select, develop, and commission. Such was Jesus’ style. He handed over to Peter – John 21:15-17. Do same now.
- As a leader, do you have your succession plan to bridge a gap? If not, what factors are responsible?
- Pray to God to give you the ability to train capable future leaders for succession.
