ESOCS Devotional 4 March 2026 – The Humble Servant Leadership Model
MEMORY VERSE: “But because of our sins He was wounded, beaten because of the evil we did. We are healed by the punishment He suffered, made whole by the blows He received.” Isaiah 53:5 GNB
TEXT: ISAIAH 52:13-53:6
Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

In Saint Luke Gospel Chapter 9:46-48, when the disciples of Jesus were campaigning for supremacy in the Kingdom, the Master’s response was simple, direct, but strange to His carnal minded followers: “For the one who is least among you all is the greatest” (Luke 9:48).
The Old Testament Bible abounds with references to many people who were obedient and humble servants of God – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, David, and the prophets. Key passages among the Old Testament texts rife with references to suffering, humility, and servant-hood include Isaiah 42:1-4; 49:1-6; 50:4-9; 52:13-15; and 53:12. Ultimately, the person and lifestyle of Jesus exemplifies it all.
The above prophetic passages are suggestive that suffering and humility are essential and inseparable part of Jesus’ model of servant leadership. Ironically, Jesus turned the values of His day upside down when He taught that serving was the road to greatness. He was obedient to His Father’s will, even unto death. His death paid the price for us, setting us free to give total obedience to our loving Father in heaven.
Jesus teaches us to serve Him by serving others – young or old, rich or poor, big or small. This points to the fact that whatever we do for any of God’s children, we do for Him. In our service to God and humanity, we are hereby admonished to have the same humble, sacrificial, gentle, giving attitude that characterized the lifestyle of the Master.
Conclusively, my brethren, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who being the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and …” (Philippians 2:5-7).
Reflections
- Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant. Ponder over.
Prayer
- Lord Jesus, give me the grace to serve in humility.
