TEXT: EXODUS 20:7-26
MEMORY VERSE: “And Moses said unto the people, fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.” Exodus 20:20 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The Ten Commandments are a set of ethical and worship principles given by God to mankind that describes God’s rule of behavior towards Him (God) by man, and man towards the society (his fellow human being). They state the foundational precepts underlying Christian ethics and morality and worship of God. It is also called “the Law” (which Moses represented) – a set of laws by which God spelt out how man should relate with Him and his fellow man. It is divided into three parts, viz: laws relating to God, laws relating to man and provision for approaching God. What then is its ultimate purpose?
The Israelites were the first to receive the Ten Commandments and God spelt out its ultimate purpose – “… that ye sin not” (Exodus 20:20). It was designed to lead them (and us) to a life of practical holiness. It was intended to draw man to Himself. It serves as a guide for Christians in worshipping God; what He wants from His people and what He forbids. It was intended for man’s peaceful cohabitation in the society, i.e., peaceful co-existence through love based relationship.
Suffice it to state that these laws are still relevant. Many Christians do not read them, but concentrate on the ones in the New Testament. But Jesus said He did not come to destroy, but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17). He came to give their real definitions and meanings for a holy life and peaceful living according to His original plan for man so that we can say, heaven at last (Matthew 5:21-22, 27-30, and a host of others- see further reading). This is the Ultimate purpose.
- Do you doubt that the Ten Commandments are still relevant today?
- Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and open the eyes of your understanding.
