ESOCS Devotional 4 April 2026 – Drawn Out To Be Set Apart
MEMORY VERSE: “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” Exodus 19:4 NIV
TEXT: EXODUS 19:1-13
In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before the mountain.
3 And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.”
So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”

God’s words to the Israelites in Exodus 19:4 are deeply personal and powerful. He reminds them that He didn’t just deliver them from Egypt to give them freedom. He brought them to Himself. They were drawn out of bondage not just for liberty’s sake but for a relationship and a purpose: to be His set-apart people.
God had miraculously delivered Israel “on eagles’ wings” – a poetic image of strength, protection, and care. Eagles soar above danger and lift their young out of harm’s way. Likewise, God lifted His people out of slavery and carried them to Mount Sinai for a divine encounter. But this deliverance came with a calling – to be a holy nation, a people distinct from the world, living in covenant with Him.
This principle still applies today. God draws us out of sin, shame, and the systems of the world, not just to rescue us but to set us apart for His glory. Our salvation is not just an escape from Egypt (bondage), but a calling into purpose, identity, and intimacy with God.
To be “set apart” means we live differently, love differently, and lead differently. We belong to a holy God, and our lives should reflect His presence and values.
Reflections
- What has God drawn me out of, and how has that shaped my identity in Him?
- Am I living as someone who is set apart, or have I returned to old patterns of bondage?
- What areas of my life need to reflect more of God’s holiness and purpose?
- How can I help others recognize that their deliverance is also a divine calling?
Action Step
Take a moment to reflect on your salvation story. Write down what God brought you out of, and what He’s calling you into. Then, choose one way this week to live intentionally, as someone set apart, whether through your choices, words, or service to others.
Prayer
- Father, thank you for drawing me out of darkness and bringing me to yourself.
- Help me to never take my salvation lightly, but to live as someone set apart for your purpose.
- Teach me to walk in holiness, humility, and obedience. May my life reflect the joy of being yours, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
