TEXT: 1 JOHN 1:1-10
MEMORY VERSE: “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 KJV
Walking in fellowship with the light of God promotes in us the need to share with our Creator and fellow human beings. Recall, sin broke man’s fellowship with God, as originally intended (Genesis 3:6-8). Yet, God, through the ages continued to make His grace-filled promise: “I will be with you.” Moreover, the coming of Jesus Christ as God in human flesh (John 1:14) has resulted in an even closer fellowship with God. Clearly, we can now have fellowship with the Triune God as Father, as Son, and as Holy Spirit.
As taught and practised by the apostles in the early Church, fellowship is the bond that links us to Jesus, as well as ties believers to one another. The Lord’s Supper, as instituted by Jesus, has also been used to indicate the need for believers’ fellowship with one another in this Church age.
However, one cannot truly walk in the light if he is ignorant of the word of God. If we conduct ourselves after the truth that has been revealed to all men through the word, then we can claim to be at one with Him. Those who are seeking to walk in the light are those who seek to know the Will of God. And this can only be actualized by constant study of His word.
It follows therefore that the condition for remaining in the light is to continue in obedience to the revealed truth. This then is the key requirement for receiving the blessings of the continual cleansing of one’s sins. Hence, the atoning blood of Jesus Christ was poured forth, from the Cross. This also is the only means by which men can receive forgiveness of sin (Acts 4:12; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:14). In verse 9 of our text, we have an indication of the fact that the blood of Jesus would only continually cleanse those who maintain their walk in the light. They must also continually confess Jesus, and steadfastly maintain the behavioural standard of the light. The fully repentant life, therefore, reaps the continual cleansing of one’s sins.
Child of God, endeavour, therefore, to walk in continual fellowship with the light, and pave your way unto eternal life in the Kingdom of God.
- Some claim to work in fellowship with the light, yet walk in darkness. What is your view?
- Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Give me the grace to walk in the light.
