TEXT: MATTHEW 5:27-37
MEMORY VERSE: “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one” (Matthew 5:37 NKJV).
Truthfulness is like warm tea taken with fresh milk at the early hours of the morning, or other appropriate times; it lights up the insides, and leaves a thrill that lifts up the emotion. Such is one’s word of honour, whether it is “Yes” or “No”. It bothers on integrity, especially the need to live an exceptionally honest life to the extent that one’s word cannot be doubted. It is acceptable to everyone as correct, and without any iota of disclaim; nothing but the truth!
“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ …” This is our Lord’s admonition. In everything we do or say, we must ensure that there is no deceit; no dubious intentions; no treachery or dishonest duplicity of purpose; no deliberate misrepresentation of facts; no falsifications, lying, wilful misconduct, distortion, dissembling or twisting of facts or truth. We must be reliable, dependable, trustworthy, and known for forthrightness. As Christians, we should be emblems of frankness, truthfulness, and uprightness.
Our life should represent acceptable ethical standards, whether spiritual, social, moral, or any other sphere of life. We should be blameless, and pure in our thoughts in order to be pure in our words and actions.
We should remove from us, those things that make us not to “conform to the image and likeness of Christ” (Rom. 8:29). We should speak and do the truth only. The Bible counsels us to “Buy the truth and sell it not …” (Prov. 23:23). Dwelling in the truth and living by it is like a lubricating oil in our life. Let us endeavour to possess that oil in us all the time. God searches for people who possess it because they are His true worshipers, and to them He would give everlasting reward.
- Give yourself a systematic training and discipline to speak the truth always, and live by it.
- Pray that the Holy Spirit of Truth may dwell richly in you all through your life.
