TEXT: DANIEL 4:19-37
MEMORY VERSE: “Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase” (Daniel 4:37).
After his experience, Nebuchadnezzar learned to be humble. He had lived among the beasts in the forest for 7 years because he had been so proud that he did not acknowledge that God Almighty is the King and ruler of heaven and earth. He had thought himself to be the ultimate, and god. Such attitude brings disaster to people, for God is God all alone; there is neither controversy nor contention in the matter. Moses said to the Israelites (Deut. 4:35; Isa. 45:5-6).
The Bible reminds us in several places that pride, arrogance, haughtiness, and undue self-esteem bring a man down, humiliate him, and make him fall greatly, and into enormous shame and degradation. Anyone who possesses any or all of those characteristics usually meets ruin in the course of life, for God abhors such people. He said he would bring them down, always; and no one can deliver people out of His hand (Deut. 32:39).
On the other hand, humility is a very rewarding virtue. People who store it in the heart and wear them as their apparel usually receive exceeding great rewards. The Bible says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6 NIV). Generally, people love and respect others who humble themselves greatly, despite their achievements or attainments in life.
We can develop humility in us if we choose to do so. It only requires conscious efforts. The Scripture gives us a wise counsel, and it says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10 KJV). It’s like building a house on the rocks.
- Always remember that at the moment of death everything means nothing, and vanity.
- Pray to God for the spirit of humility to be granted to you; and to reject and hate pride.
