TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 11:16-27
MEMORY VERSE: “After the time of mourning was over, David had her [Bathsheba] brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord” (2 Samuel 11:27 NIV).
David left his responsibility as the leader of his army, which he handed over to Joab his captain, and chose the comfort of his palace instead, at a critical time when he should go to war to save his people. He ended up in adultery with Bathsheba, another man’s wife (2 Sam. 11:1-21).
If you commit yourself to your calling, commission, work, assignment, or the things patterning to the gospel, your mind would not be preoccupied with sin and the things of the world.
As a Christian, God demands that you should pay attention to the teachings of the gospel. You should not allow the things and pleasures of the world to distract you from focusing on Jesus, the gospel, and the kingdom of heaven. The Bible says, “And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction” (1 Cor 7:35 NKJV).
Like David and Israel at that time, every Christian today is facing spiritual war against sin, Satan, and that kingdom of darkness. The purpose is to save their soul and win victory for their health, and material wellbeing. You should be diligent and committed to winning your own war. No one would do it for you. There is little time left. Do not relapse into comfort zone like David; otherwise, you would focus on the wrong things like he did.
Mortify the flesh, kill worldly desires, lust, immorality, and all things that pattern to ungodliness, that you may win that war. With fervent determination, bring into subjection, all thoughts that are contrary to the teachings of the gospel of Christ.
- Choose to live in holiness like a heavenly citizen.
- Pray for strength to overcome the flesh.
