TEXT: MATTHEW 5:13-20
MEMORY VERSE: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and (recognize and honour and) glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 AMP).
We became children of light through Christ. Before His crucifixion and resurrection, humanity was in complete spiritual darkness. But God gave Him to us, who became our Light, and all who accept Him became children of Light. In John 1:4, 9, the Bible says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men … That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world” (NKJV).
God imputed the light of righteousness to us. We became pure, righteous, and holy when we accepted Christ as our Saviour. The light that God expects us to “shine before men” is the need for us to practice holiness and righteous works for people of the world to see, that they might imitate us.
God wants us to exhibit in our life pattern the attributes, attitudes, and characters of Christ in order to bring Him praise and glory. When people see our actions or reactions, and the manner in which we moderate our life in godly ways, they would feel safe and secure to relate and have dealings with us. At such moments, they thank God for our sake, and for bringing us into their life. There would be good testimonies about us in many places.
One of our major responsibilities is to ensure that God’s name and His Church are not blasphemed among unbelievers because of our lifestyle or conduct (Rom. 2:24). As the light of the world, let us represent Christ wherever we go, through reflecting His principles and manner of life. We are His ambassadors to do the good pleasure of the Father. He came into the world to show the way to heaven. Before He left the world, He gave us an important assignment. He said, “Occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13). In other words, He commanded us to continue the work of the kingdom, through shining our light and showing people the way to heaven.
- Remember that you owe God the responsibility to drive spiritual darkness away from the world.
- Pray for the grace to remain true to God all the days of your life.
