ESOCS Devotional 28 November 2024 – Youthfulness With A Caveat
MEMORY VERSE: “Rejoice O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the way of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.” Ecclesiastes 11:19
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 11:9-10
Rejoice, O young man, in your youth,
And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth;
Walk in the ways of your heart,
And in the sight of your eyes;
But know that for all these
God will bring you into judgment.
10 Therefore remove sorrow from your heart,
And put away evil from your flesh,
For childhood and youth are vanity.

Youthfulness in the right sense equals usefulness. However, it appears the reverse happens to be the case with our present generation, where there seems to be a reversal in several respects in the hope bestowed on the youthful age. A situation where handsomeness is considered to be a tool for sexual adventure and hooliganism and beauty is the foundation for waywardness instead of a virtuous lifestyle.
The Psalmist in Psalm 90:12 made a very pertinent prayer: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Doubtlessly, youthfulness presents us with so much of time, strength and energy, several opportunities to explore with a lot of pleasure to make the heart merry.
Unfortunately, the abundance of these things is the reason for the irreverent lifestyle and unbridled immorality exhibited by our young ones. For when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is eminent. It must be clearly understood that no matter how much one wants to explore the youthful pleasures, there is a serious caveat that should never be neglected. Whether the heart is led into exploring sexual pleasures or addictions, drugs, gangsters, partying and all forms of revelling, playfulness, etc, one must be aware that judgment is eminent, sure and certain.
God is committed to bring into judgment every of our action here on earth. Youthfulness is not an excuse to escape judgment and the attendant punishment, for any wrong deeds: “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man … But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things” (Romans 2:1-2).
Beloved, no matter how exuberant you may want to be as a youth, be aware that you will be judged. You will account for all that you do now. Therefore, do not waste your youthful days in worldliness. It will profit you nothing.
- Be determined to make the best out of your youth.
- Be youthful and useful.
- Curtail the pleasures of life now and be more productive.
- Father, thank you for the grace of life and length of days, forgive any abuse of privilege and grant me the grace to live rightly for you, in Jesus name. Amen
