TEXT: EZEKIEL 6:2-14
MEMORY VERSE: “So will I stretch out my hand upon them, and make the land desolate, yea, more desolate than the wilderness toward Diblath, in all their habitations: and they shall know that I am the Lord.” Ezekiel 6:14 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The summary of our text is the condemnation of idolatry by God through Prophet Ezekiel and the punishment for the sin. Idolatry is the practice of worshipping statutes and other things as gods. Israel was engulfed in this sin, so God condemned it and made it known to all Israel, including those who had been taken into captivity by the Assyrians in 722/21 B.C.
Israel would always go to the mountains and hills (high places) where they worshipped their idol gods (images). This had been the main sin of the people. This attitude was against God’s commandment to them not to have other gods beside Him, and not to make for themselves any graven image, or anything that looks like it anywhere, or bow down before or serve them (Exodus 20:3-5). This attitude divided their loyalty to (the true) God of heaven and earth. This attracted God’s punishment – He would bring sword upon them – they would be slain and their bodies scattered before their idols, destroy their high places, their altars would be desolate, and their images broken. God would do this and they would know He is God.
The lesson for us is that whenever we make an idol god, whether fictitious in our mind, or we worship things of this world, we cannot give our total commitment to God. Serving another God is against His commandment. It attracts great punishment if we do not repent.
- Do you have anything you idolize?
- Give me the spirit to remain loyal to you at all times in any circumstance.
