ESOCS Devotional 28 July 2025 – Faith is All You Need
MEMORY VERSE: “But Jesus overheard them and said to Jarius, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.’” Mark 5:36 NLT
TEXT: MARK 5:1-16
And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. 39 When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”
40 And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

In the world, those who are sick look for the physician. At the clinic, certain protocols are in place. Consultation fees are necessarily paid. Then the patient sees the doctor, who examines and prescribes drugs. But the bill for drugs and treatment must be settled before further attention is given, or no deal. But those who come to Jesus with their health challenges or any other problem or affliction only need one thing – faith. Do you believe?
In our text, the woman with the issue of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered so much in the hands of many doctors (Matthew 9:20, 21) only came to Jesus with her faith. The doctors had prescribed many supposed cures, to no avail. She had thus spent all that she had to get a remedy. None worked. However, when she heard of Jesus, she encouraged herself that if she could only touch His clothes, she would be healed. And it was so. Her faith drove her to reach Jesus. No more, no less. Praise God.
On the part of Jarius’s daughter, Jesus only asked the man to believe. In this case, Jesus simply asked the girl’s father to trust Him that He was able to do that which would bring him comfort. And, ‘Talitha Cumi’, it was done (Matthew 9:23-26; Luke 8:49-56; Mark 5:41). Hallelujah! Mark recorded the exact words that Jesus uttered in Aramaic tongue at the raising of the dead girl.
These two miracles were complete and immediate. There was great amazement. Yes, of course! A true miracle will produce amazement in the minds of people, because it is openly perceived. No hidden agenda. No conjuring. No sacrifices, or invoking of strange powers. It comes with divine power on the part of the Healer, and ardent faith on the part of the patient. Only believe!
