TEXT: ROMANS 12:17-21
MEMORY VERSE: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
We live in a world where many Christians behave like unbelievers – they repay evil with evil. But the Bible clearly states that it is not the place of any Christian to seek revenge (Matthew 5:39). To forgive is a good deed in the sight of God; and when we do so, we overcome evil. But if it is the opposite, then evil has overcome us.
The verses in our text summarized the real core of Christian living- to love and forgive. If we love someone the way Jesus loves us, we will be willing to forgive. Forgiveness involves both attitudes (behaving well towards the one who hates you, even greetings – verse 20) and actions (giving gift items, etc.).
Christians should always do that which is right in their dealings with all men. They should conduct all aspects of their life in an honourable and honest manner (2 Corinthians 8:21).
It is a fact that to forgive is not natural, but supernatural, and only God can give us the willpower and strength to love and forgives as He does.
We should emulate Jesus Christ. He left us the example that we should follow His steps (1 Peter 2:21). When He was beaten, He did not retaliate. Be slow to wrath, for action deferred, is action diffused.
- It is NOT natural not to retaliate, but supernatural.
- May the Holy Spirit give us the spirit of self-control
