ESOCS Devotional 27 March 2026 – A Clarion Call to Repentance
MEMORY VERSE: ““Let your broken hearts show your sorrow. Tearing your clothes is not enough. Come back to the Lord your God. He is kind and full of mercy; He is always ready to forgive and not punish.” Joel 2:13 GNB
TEXT: JOEL 2:12-17
““Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So rend your heart, and not your garments;
Return to the Lord your God,
For He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.
14 Who knows if He will turn and relent,
And leave a blessing behind Him—
A grain offering and a drink offering
For the Lord your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion,
Consecrate a fast,
Call a sacred assembly;
16 Gather the people,
Sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and nursing babes;
Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,
And the bride from her dressing room.
17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
Weep between the porch and the altar;
Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not give Your heritage to reproach,
That the nations should rule over them.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’ ”

In our text today, Joel earnestly calls out to the people to repent and turn back to the Lord. The clarion call for repentance was to all people. This indicates that the entire nation had developed a culture of sin. Moreover, the call for repentance was more than an appeal to individuals. It was a mass communication approach to a society that had plunged themselves neck deep into sin. It involved all in the nation to turn back to God.
Because of impending God’s judgment, the prophet insisted that all the people should repent and return to God. It was a call to the young and the old, drunkards, farmers, traders – every one – including the priests, (Matthew 11:28, John 7:37). He called for a day of mourning, fasting, and solemn assembly – in the belief that the looming disaster would thereby be averted. It follows therefore that, by encouraging repentance rather than dwelling in sin, the man of God showed more interest in solutions, rather than problems or punishment. This is a worthy goal for all ministers and believers in general. This is also a pointer for us all to the Great Commission Project (Matthew 28:19-20).
Our Father in heaven is not desirous that anyone should perish. He rather wishes that all should come to repentance and be saved (John 3:17). This is the main reason He gave out His Only Begotten Son to sinful humanity (John 3:16). In the New Covenant dispensation, John the Baptist and Jesus Christ initiated the call to repentance project (Matt. 3:1-2; 4:17). Before His ascension, He commissioned every believer to continue with the Great Commission. It’s time we all rise up to the challenge. The Kingdom of God is at hand.
Reflections
- Repent and come back to the Saviour. Make no further delay.
Prayer
- Lord, my God, empower me the more for the task ahead.
