ESOCS Devotional 26 September 2023 – Discipline the Child
MEMORY VERSE: “Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire”. Proverbs 29:17 NIV
TEXT: PROVERBS 29:11-END (KJV)
A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.
13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the Lord lighteneth both their eyes.
14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.
17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.
20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.
22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.
26 Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the Lord.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

One of the menaces that is bedeviling our society today is the rate of moral decadence, crimes and social vices amongst young people. The rate at which this cankerworm is fast growing and spreading like wild fire across the globe is quite alarming. There are so many modalities that are being put in place by different bodies; both the church, schools and corporate organizations to curb this menace, yet it seems enough is not being done.
Truth is that sometimes, the root cause of all these challenges can be traced to the homes.
The family is the bedrock of the society, and it is expedient to understand that every individual out there comes from a home; every child and young person out there comes from a particular family.
Please, be aware that Children are Tabular Rasa, this means that once a child is born, he automatically subscribes to whatsoever the immediate environment presents to him/her. If a child meets a home or an environment which is guided by rules and morality, and everyone in and around there walks in tandem with the set rules, and also, if enough disciplinary measures are put in place to address violations of laws and orders, that child will have no option other than to align.
There are parents and guardians who handle and treat children with kid gloves; they allow these kids do whatsoever they desire, even at the expense of good morals. No Sir! You don’t allow children do everything they desire; you guide them in the right paths, because discipline itself is not an enemy to enthusiasm.
As a parent or guardian, please can I tell you something? If you ever desire to be delighted in the results you will get in the Life and Destiny of your children, make Discipline a compulsion.
- When we fail to discipline our children while they are much younger, they will grow into horrible adults, and become a thorn on the flesh.
- Our Father in heaven, thank you for the gift of the fruits of the womb; please, give us grace to raise them well and ensure they are disciplined in their dealings.
