ESOCS Devotional 26 November 2024 – The Advantage of Wisdom
MEMORY VERSE: “Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength” Ecclesiastes 9:16
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 9:1-6
For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them. 2 All things come alike to all:
One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;
To the good, the clean, and the unclean;
To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
As is the good, so is the sinner;
He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.
3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing,
And they have no more reward,
For the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
Nevermore will they have a share
In anything done under the sun.

One of man’s basic struggle is to have an advantage in life. It is the quest to have an edge in order not to be edged out in life. There are those who go for career advantage and reach the professional cadre in their life. Others are in pursuit of financial advantage; some others pursue marital advantage. The craving for political advantage has its own seekers, while seeking spiritual advantage has taken the centre stage in the life of many. Those who possess these advantages, many times, never fail to rob it off on others.
However, it must be stated that no matter the advantage you have access to in life, the wisdom advantage surpasses them all: “Wisdom is the principal things; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” (Prov. 4:7); “…but wisdom is profitable to direct” (Eccl. 10:10); “Then said I, wisdom is better than strength…” (Eccl. 9:16).
The possession of wisdom is the highest edge anyone should desire in life; this is on the grounds that wisdom takes a principal stage over strength. What you waste so much time and energy to achieve with your strength can easily be closed out effortlessly with the application of wisdom. People who possess strength can never match a man’s wisdom. Without doubt, wisdom will make a mess of even the warrior’s strength.
More so, wisdom is advantageous in direction provision. It is not possible to possess the wisdom of God and miss your way in life. Direction for life, career, marriage, business, ministry, and relationships is very clear with the possession of wisdom. To lack wisdom is to be disadvantaged directionally. You know your way when you have wisdom.
Furthermore, wisdom gives your life advantage over death: “…but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.” (Eccl. 7:12); “For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtained favour of the LORD” (Prov. 8:35). Wisdom is a major guarantee of life. On the wings of wisdom is the assurance of life. To find wisdom is to find life. Thus, death is defeasible if we possess wisdom. Take advantage today of all the advantages wisdom provides for you in life.
- Never exist in ignorance and foolishness.
- Seek God’s wisdom and ensure you possess it at all times.
- Constantly apply God’s wisdom in all you do in life.
- Father, thank you for providing us with divine wisdom advantage; help us to always take advantage of all that wisdom provides for the betterment of our lives, in Jesus name. Amen.
