TEXT: 2 SAMUEL 19:1-15
MEMORY VERSE: “And it was told Joab, behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom”. 2 Samuel 19:1 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
There are many ways we can support our leaders. One of such ways is by correcting his wrong action. Many people may see it as a wrong approach, so they will not do it because the leader to be corrected may not be happy. Yes, but indeed, that is what contemporary management says – we can correct our leaders and we all benefit from it. It is also godly to do so with love, anyway (1 Timothy 2:1-3).
In our text, Joab scolded King David for not appreciating his people’s victory over rebellion – Absalom’s rebellion; so, a dreadful consequence awaits him. Joab knew he was risking the king’s displeasure by confronting him; but he knew the problem it would bring if he failed to do that (v 7). David was deeply pained with the death of his son Absalom, so he was mourning him such that he forgot/or did not consider it more important appreciating his soldiers for quelling Absalom’s rebellion by killing him. If Absalom was allowed to live, Joab reasoned, there would be another rebellion because Absalom had a thirst for power and the people would abandon David.
The lesson here is that at times it pays to reprove those in authority over us, but it has to be done constructively with love. It should be by way of advice. It may be risky, but the benefit is for the church, society, and nation, as the case may be. Leaders who are corrected by their subordinates should commend such action and not go after the subordinates. It is good before God – 1 Tim.2:3.
- What do you do about the fear of being punished, lack of boldness and conviction of your good thought?
- Ask for the ability to overcome the above challenges.
