ESOCS Devotional 26 August 2025 – The Mystery of Faith
MEMORY VERSE: “For whosoever is born of God overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4
TEXT: 1 JOHN 5:1-15
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

The entire creation exercise and human existence on earth remain a mystery that can only be demystified via our connection with the mystery personality, God. He moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform. No wonder the key principles and basic elements for human survival on earth (of which faith is one) are all enclosed in mystery. The mystery of faith is a key to victory over sin and everything on earth. You should not be a victim of any negative or evil circumstance when faith is fully at work in your life. It is the mystery that David explained when he brought down Goliath with a sling and a stone. The three Hebrew friends, (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) humbled Nebuchadnezzar when the fiery furnace heated seven times could not burn them.
The victory you need to overcome the problems of life and the world despite their complexities is faith. With your faith on ground, victory is guaranteed. The mystery of faith is what makes a man a mystery to his generation. When you understand the mystery of faith and you work with it, you will come to a point where you become a mystery yourself. Everything about you becomes a mystery to all who come in contact with you; just as it remains a mystery how Isaac sowed in a land of famine and reaped the same year hundredfold. He would dig a well and get water; others would dig and not get water (Gen. 26:1-22). By the working of your faith, may your story shock your generation, in Jesus’ name.
What then is faith? Faith is accepting scriptural responsibilities in order to see divine possibilities. That is, faith is doing what you need to do to show that you believe God, in order to commit God to doing His part. When God told Abraham: “Get out of your father’s land” (Gen. 12:1), he believed God and left his father’s house. Because of his simple obedience, God took him to the land He promised him. Therefore, when you simply obey God, you show that you believe Him; and that would commit Him to do His part. Until man plays his role, he cannot be in partnership with God on any issue, including prayers and his life; and God may not feel obligated to do him good and show him favour.
In the journey of faith, both God and man have their separate roles to play. Until you know what to do, faith is not yet in place. May God open our eyes to such scriptural realities.
