TEXT: HEBREWS 13:1-6
MEMORY VERSE: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The first three verses of our text implore us on what to love: love God, then love people. You don’t love God when you don’t love your neighbors. The command to love is not to be shown to a particular group or closely related folks. Love for brethren, strangers, sinners and the helpless cuts across humanity. Our love should be with sympathy and not sycophancy.
Our key verse talks about covetousness, love of money. The fact is that the natural man can never be satisfied with the amount he has. The more he acquires, the more he wishes to get more; and this is where the need for contentment comes in place. In 1 Timothy 6:6, the scripture says “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
Contentment is a commendable conduct. With God, a little can mean much. Let us learn to reason and do things His own way, and everything concerning us will be settled. Proverbs 15:16 says, “Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasures with trouble.” Contentment saves one from trouble, a non-regenerate man cannot be contented. He will always pierce himself with much sorrow because he can never be satisfied with what he has, even if he acquires the whole world.
- Is your conduct commendable? Sit down sometimes and do a stock taking on your attitude to wealth acquisition.
- Lord, help me to cease for undue love for material things of this life, in Jesus name.
