ESOCS Devotional 25 January 2026 – Living Inside Out
MEMORY VERSE: “In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Matthew 23:28 NIV
TEXT: MATTHEW 23:23-END
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’
31 “Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. 33 Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

Jesus’ words in Matthew 23:28 are piercing. He addressed the religious leaders of His day, the Pharisees who looked polished and pious on the outside, but whose hearts were corrupt and distant from God. The issue Jesus highlights here is not about perfection but about authenticity. True righteousness flows from the inside out, not the other way around. While people may be impressed by outward behaviour, titles, or religious activities, God examines the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). A life that honours Him must be transformed from the inside out not just in performance, but in purity.
The danger of outward religion:
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees not because they obeyed the law, but because they used religion as a mask. Their concern was about what people thought of them rather than what God saw within them. He called them “whitewashed tombs” (Matthew 23:27), beautiful on the outside, but full of death inside. This is a warning to all believers: religious activity without inner transformation is spiritual deception. As 2 Timothy 3:5 says, “having a form of godliness but denying its power.” God desires more than external compliance; He seeks hearts that are surrendered.
Transformation starts from within:
Proverbs 4:23 urges, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The heart is the source of our words, actions, and intentions. Jesus said in Luke 6:45, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart… for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” If our inner life is full of pride, bitterness, or selfishness, no amount of outward discipline can hide it forever. But if our heart is filled with love for God, humility, and truth, our lives will naturally reflect it.
How to live inside-out:
- Be honest with God (Psalm 139:23–24). Invite God to search your heart and reveal hidden areas of sin or hypocrisy.
- Pursue inner purity (Psalm 51:10). Like David, pray: “Create in me a pure heart, O God.” Allow the Holy Spirit to do deep heart work in you.
- Practice integrity (James 1:22). Let your faith show in action. Don’t just hear the Word, live it.
- Be accountable (Proverbs 27:17). Surround yourself with people who challenge you to live authentically and grow spiritually.
Reflections
- Are you living from the inside out, or simply trying to look right on the outside? Do your actions match your inner life? God is not impressed by appearance. He is after a sincere heart. True Christianity isn’t about putting on a show. It’s about becoming more like Christ in thought, motive, and deed.
Prayer
- Father, I come before you asking for truth in my inward parts. Remove any mask of hypocrisy and cleanse me from the inside out. May my life reflect a heart that truly loves you – not just in what people see, but in what you see. Transform me by your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
