TEXT: 1 TIMOTHY 6:9-12
MEMORY VERSE: “And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.” Genesis 14:14
The motto of the Boys’ Scout movement is “Be Prepared”. When Abram learned that Lot, his nephew, was a prisoner, he immediately tried to help him. It would have been easier and safer not to get involved, but with his nephew in serious trouble, Abram acted immediately. It was because he was prepared – he had trained servants.
The incidents as contained in our text portrayed Abram’s characteristics. One is that he had courage that came from God. Facing a powerful enemy, he attacked and was victorious. Two is that he was prepared. Before now, he had taken time to train his men in the art of war for any potential conflict.
We have important lessons to learn from this. First, we must be prepared. We never know when we will be called upon to complete difficult tasks, either in the house of God, office, business place, at home, society, etc. Like Abram, we should prepare for those times. Secondly, we should be courageous like Abram – our courage or help comes from God. Finally, sometimes we must get involved in a painful situation in order to help others. We should be willing to act immediately when others need our help, especially in the work of God, the needy, the poor, the widow, and the downtrodden in the household of God. It is part of our mandate. Be your brother’s keeper.
Be prepared at all times!
- Lack of planning is a barrier to any venture, business or otherwise.
- God, help me to be in a position to help when the need arises.
