ESOCS Devotional 24 May 2025 – The Nature of Christ’s Coming
MEMORY VERSE: “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” Revelation 16:15
TEXT: REVELATION 16:15-21
“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.
17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

Lord Jesus Christ has always hinted and at some points told His disciples about His coming back after completing the purpose for which He was on the earth at that time. At first, He came to earth through the virgin birth to save mankind from sin and eternal condemnation through His death, burial and resurrection in order to reconcile man to God and give man eternal life. This salvation affords man the opportunity to express the Kingdom life on earth through love and righteousness. And then, serve Jesus Christ the Lord and King of God’s Kingdom by sharing the good news of the Kingdom (Gospel), which is salvation in Christ Jesus through the cross of His death. These were the nature of His first coming. Now, He is coming back but in a different manner.
His Second Coming is to rapture the saints and establish the Kingdom of God and His government on earth – a new world, as God intended from the beginning of time, a new earth – the New Jerusalem that will descend from heaven (Rev. 21:1-2). When Jesus comes again, our present mortal body will be transformed into an immortal body (1 Cor. 15:35-57; Rom. 8:23-24); and we will live and reign on earth with Jesus forever.
Our memory verse calls our attention to the need for preparedness. It gives us an idea of the glorious things that would happen to us when our Lord Jesus will come again. We should be conscious of it and be steadfastness in hope through maintaining the holiness and righteousness that God has given to us through Jesus Christ our Lord. This is how we can qualify to live in the New Jerusalem – the New World.
Beloved, be mindful that our Lord’s Second Coming will be unpredictable. It will happen suddenly- within the twinkling of an eye! Let us remain faithful to our calling in Christ Jesus. Let us be steadfast in doing good – living a holy lifestyle. Let nothing distract us from this goal (1 Cor. 7:35) – not the world and all its attractions and pleasures (Rom. 8:35-39).
