ESOCS Devotional 23 September 2025 – The Good Life
MEMORY VERSE: “And those officers provided victual for King Solomon, and for all that came unto King Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.” 1 Kings 4:27 KJV
TEXT: : 1 KINGS 4:26-34
Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 27 And these governors, each man in his month, provided food for King Solomon and for all who came to King Solomon’s table. There was no lack in their supply. 28 They also brought barley and straw to the proper place, for the horses and steeds, each man according to his charge.
29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. 30 Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men—than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. 33 Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. 34 And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

The details of King Solomon’s kingdom is outlined in Chapter Four of 1 Kings.
Then there’s a beautiful summary of what the good life is really like: verse 27: “All that came into king Solomon’s table lacked nothing.” (1 Kings 4:27)
God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 17 has come true, as his descendants are living in the Promised Land, in great numbers, enjoying great blessings.
But the blessings don’t stop with God’s people: they extend to the nations, as was also promised to Abraham. God’s people are enjoying the great blessings of life, as they follow God’s king in God’s land.
As they enjoy life as the people of His covenant promise, they now receive the gift of wisdom through their king, whose great wisdom “exceeded that of all the wise men of the East and the wise men of Egypt” ( v 30).
As Proverbs 9:10 tells us, “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.”
Living a good life comes from hearing and believing the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:11).
CHALLENGES:
- What is your personal ideology of a good life?
