ESOCS Devotional 23 December 2024 – Reign of Righteous King
MEMORY VERSE: “Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.”Isaiah 32:1 KJV
TEXT: ISAIAH 32:1–8
Behold, a king will reign in righteousness,
And princes will rule with justice.
2 A man will be as a hiding place from the wind,
And a cover from the tempest,
As rivers of water in a dry place,
As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
3 The eyes of those who see will not be dim,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
4 Also the heart of the rash will understand knowledge,
And the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.
5 The foolish person will no longer be called generous,
Nor the miser said to be bountiful;
6 For the foolish person will speak foolishness,
And his heart will work iniquity:
To practice ungodliness,
To utter error against the Lord,
To keep the hungry unsatisfied,
And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
7 Also the schemes of the schemer are evil;
He devises wicked plans
To destroy the poor with lying words,
Even when the needy speaks justice.
8 But a generous man devises generous things,
And by generosity he shall stand.

This is a beautiful chapter. It contains some much-needed good news about a righteous King and a future kingdom. In it, the prophet makes clear there is a lot of good news in the Bible.
Yes, there are judgments and warnings, but the whole of the story presents a bright future with peace, justice, and happy times destined for those who follow God’s path. Unfortunately, many people prefer to walk a darker path where injustice, habitual sin patterns, and cruelty are the norms. Taking advantage of people and overlooking the sufferings of others has been a common practice in this broken world. It is obviously the wiser choice to turn from that darker path toward a much brighter future. The problem is most people love the darker paths and momentary pleasures.
But in this chapter, we get another glimpse of the bright future when a Righteous King will rule. The wounds of humanity will heal in a long era of peace and justice. I believe most people want such a future but tragically, only a small percentage will make that choice.
But while this passage anticipates the future reign of the Messiah in the millennial kingdom, we must not overlook the spiritual application right now. Christ wants to reign as Lord in the life of each one of us who repents and puts his or her faith in Him. He can right now administer righteousness and peace to us in a spiritual sense. Are you living in submission to His righteous rule in your life right now?
My brethren, a day is coming when all that is wrong with this world will be set right. Jesus Christ will reign in righteousness and truth, with a hand of justice. Let us be living a life that is holy and acceptable before the Lord our God, a life of right living.
- Have you surrendered wholly to God? Are you a living sacrifice, living a life that is holy and acceptable unto Him?
- God Almighty, I ask that you help me to live a life of righteousness before you.
