TEXT: 1 TIMOTHY 6: 6-19
MEMORY VERSE: “Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should rather be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 6: 17 NLT).
In Matthew 16:26, our Lord asked about why a man should forfeit eternal life because of the perishable material things of this world. The question is, “Is anything worth more than the soul?” In our text today, Paul cautioned his spiritual son, Timothy, to be careful with material possessions.
Yet, there is greater wealth in godliness, with contentment. Focusing on applying God’s word to our life leads to godliness and contentment. A godly man focuses on spiritual things that will result in eternal life (Psalm 37: 16; Phil. 4:11; Heb. 13:5).
In verse 7 of our text, Paul observes, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” This is an important lesson to all true believers. Furthermore, in order to come to this understanding, we must come to the realization that our passing through this world is too short a moment, to focus only on material things (James 4:14). It can merely be likened to a vapour, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
One’s relationship with God, is the true foundation upon which the contented life is built. Material wealth does not bring true happiness; rather, life lived in Christ and the Holy Spirit is a treasured life. People who crave for money, wealth or riches wander away from the true faith, and pierced themselves with many sorrows. Let’s be guided.
- Successful pastors are known by the amount of wealth they control. Discuss.
- Lord, may you not allow us to be beggars while serving you.
